Sour Cherry U-Pick (Opens Aug 3, 2024)

Did you know that St. Therese has a mature Sour Cherry U-PICK ORCHARD!?!?  Well yes, we do 🙂

The sour cherries typically ripen some time around the end of JULY through the beginning of AUGUST (the exact dates vary year to year, depending on when the crop flowers and the weather). Stay tune for updates as to specific sour cherry U-Pick dates and time, as well as costs.

2024 U-Pick Sour Cherry Information:

Dates & Times: August 3 thru the end of the season. Open 6am-8pm daily.

Cost: $20 /4L bucket. End of season deal: pick as much as you want, and give a donation. Payment by cash or e-transfer (to office@sttherese.ca; please include Cherry U-Pick in the Memo).

Location: St. Therese Institute, 650 Ursuline Ave, Bruno, SK (map)
Drive north on Main St. and directly into the St. Therese Institute parking lot at the end of Main.

Instructions and Notes:

• Specific instructions will be posted outside the Main Entrance, but to summarize:
  • During weekday business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-12noon/1-5pm ): ring the door bell and come into the main office (first door on the left when you enter the front hallway).
  • Saturdays from 7am-12noon: come over to our pop-up Coffee Bistro on the front balcony on the NW side of the parking lot
  • All other times: Self-serve directions and payment instructions will posted.
• BYOBucket (bring your own bucket) is recommended. There will also be loaner buckets at the front entrance on a first-come, first-borrow basis; plastic bags will be provided to transfer your picked cherries into when you are finished picking.
• The orchards are a 5 minute walk from the parking lot. The walking path will be clearly marked. (Please avoid driving through the St. Bruno Parish Cemetery to access the orchards.)
• Bug spray and sun screen are recommended.

The sour cherries are still not quite ripe enough for picking. We are tentatively planning for opening next weekend — Aug 2 or 3? More updates to follow.

[UPDATE 2024-07-19]

After a cool, wet spring, the cherries are trying hard to ripen, and the hot temperatures that we’ve been seeing over the past two weeks are encouraging them along. The difference in redness is noticeable from day to day.

Sour Cherry U-Pick in the St. Therese Institute orchards might be opened by July 27, but it may also take a few extra days for the fruit to push through to that perfect-to-pick point. We are anticipating that there will still be fruit available for U-Pick during Bruno Cherry Sunday on Aug. 11, 2024!
